La. gov pushing business partnership with charters.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana Gov. Bobby
Jindal proposed Wednesday to expand the state's
charter school laws to get businesses involved in
creating new schools.
The legislation, as Jindal described it, would let
businesses provide a facility or land for a charter
school. In exchange, the business would get a
minority percentage of seats on the board that
runs the school and 50 percent of the school's
enrollment capacity for its workers' children.
The other half of the school's available capacity
would be for children who live near where the
school would be located.
The business also could partner with the charter
school on career counseling, technical education
and mentoring initiatives and create specialized
training programs they may want. Jindal called it
a way to create jobs for students and get qualified
workers for businesses.
"We believe this legislation will be an important
part of improving education across Louisiana,"
Jindal told a meeting of the Louisiana Association
of Business and Industry, asking for members'
help to pass the new law and to participate in the
program if created.
The governor said the proposal is modeled after a
Florida law that has been adopted by 14 other
states. Five schools in Florida are run under the
partnership arrangement, according to Jindal's
office.
Lawmakers at the LABI meeting said they need
more details to decide whether they support the
idea. They will consider it in the regular legislative
session that begins April 25.
