Southern Sudan’s week-long referendum on
independence from the north that began Jan. 9
has boosted passenger and cargo traffic for
airlines based in neighboring Kenya, Business
Daily reported, citing industry statistics.
In the run-up to the vote, traffic between Kenya’s
capital, Nairobi, and the Southern Sudanese
capital of Juba rose to 8,000 passengers a month
from an average of 5,800, the Nairobi-based
newspaper reported today.
Southern Sudanese voters living in Kenya,
referendum observers, journalists, aid workers,
and business travelers have driven demand, it
said.
Kenya Airways Ltd., Africa’s third largest airline,
and Jetlink Express, a local carrier, compete on the
route, it said.
